Technical Terms Used in Thermal Power Plant
Superheated Steam : Steam heated above its boiling temperature so it contains no water droplets and can run the turbine efficiently.
Saturated Steam: Steam at boiling temperature that may still contain tiny water droplets.
Flue Gases: Hot gases produced when coal burns in the boiler.
Condensate: Water obtained when exhaust steam is cooled in the condenser.
Draft: The movement of air and flue gases through the boiler.
PLF (Plant Load Factor): The percentage of the plant’s installed capacity that is actually used to generate electricity over a period of time.
SCC (Specific Coal Consumption): The amount of coal required to generate one unit (1 kWh) of electricity.
Heat Rate: The amount of heat energy required to produce one unit (1 kWh) of electricity.
GCV (Gross Calorific Value): The total amount of heat released when one kilogram of coal is completely burned.
Auxiliary Power Consumption (APC): The electrical power consumed by the plant’s own equipment, such as pumps, fans, and conveyors.
NCV (Net Calorific Value): The useful heat available from coal after subtracting heat lost with water vapor.
Excess Air: Additional air supplied to ensure complete combustion of coal.
Vacuum: Pressure lower than atmospheric pressure, typically maintained in the condenser to improve turbine efficiency.
Blowdown: Removal of a portion of boiler water to control impurities and dissolved solids.
Availability Factor: The percentage of time the plant is ready to generate power.
Capacity Factor: The ratio of actual energy generated to the maximum possible generation over a period.
Forced Outage: Unplanned shutdown due to equipment failure or operational issues.
Scheduled Outage: Planned shutdown for maintenance or inspection.
Ramp Rate: The speed at which plant load can be increased or decreased.
LOI (Loss on Ignition): The percentage of unburned carbon present in ash.
AFT (Ash Fusion Temperature): The temperature at which ash begins to soften and melt.
Stack Emission: Gases and particles released through the chimney.
Make-up Rate: The amount of additional water required to compensate for losses in the cycle.
