Contorq Unit is a specially designed torque control device used to provide accurate and consistent torque during cable winding and unwinding operations in applications like Cable Reeling Drums (CRD). It acts as a slipping clutch that ensures smooth cable movement and prevents over-tensioning or jerks in the cable system.
Construction and Working of Contorq Unit
The Contorq unit is a continuously slipping torque transmission device. It uses UHMW (Ultra High Molecular Weight) polyethylene discs which act as frictional interfaces inside the gear wheel. This gear is mounted on the worm shaft of the NUR worm gear box, and a pinion mounted on the output shaft of the flange-mounted geared motor drives the gear wheel.
⚙️ Working Principle
- The Contorq consists of a series of friction discs, arranged alternately — one connected to the hub on the drive shaft and the other to a freely rotating gear wheel.
- These discs are pressed together by adjustable spring pressure.
- The assembly runs in synthetic oil (Servomesh SP-460) that acts as both lubricant and coolant.
- When slip occurs between the gear and the hub, controlled torque is transmitted — ensuring smooth winding/unwinding of the cable.
- The spring pressure determines the torque level and can be fine-tuned as per operational needs.
🧭 Torque Adjustment Procedure
- Torque adjustment is done using the castellated nut, which can be accessed after removing the flange-mounted geared motor.
- Rotate the nut clockwise ➜ increases torque.
- Rotate the nut anti-clockwise ➜ decreases torque.
- After adjustment, ensure the torque value meets the required cable tension and reeling speed.
Advantages of Using Contorq Unit
- Ensures smooth and controlled cable winding
- Protects cable from jerks, sudden pulls, or tension surges
- Provides constant torque over long operational hours
- Compact and maintenance-friendly design
- Oil-immersed system reduces wear and overheating
- Enhances safety and life of cable reeling drum components
Applications of Contorq Unit
The Contorq unit is primarily used in:
- Cable Reeling Drums (CRD) for stacker-reclaimer and cranes
- Hoisting and lifting mechanisms
- Material handling equipment requiring constant torque
- Winding/unwinding systems in ports, mining, and steel plants
Maintenance of Contorq Unit
To ensure consistent performance and long life, follow these maintenance tips:
- Check oil level periodically and maintain recommended grade (Servomesh SP-460).
- Clean external housing to prevent dust accumulation.
- Inspect UHMW discs for wear during scheduled maintenance.
- Verify torque setting after every overhaul or gearbox replacement.
- Always operate within specified temperature limits (generally below 80°C).
